Capturing the Energy of Footsteps Dance School
I recently worked with Footsteps Dance School in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, where business owner Nigel needed a full refresh of images for his website and social media. The goal was simple – to show the real atmosphere of the classes, highlight the enjoyment of the students, and give the school professional visuals that reflect the quality of teaching.
Natural, Candid Photography for Dance Classes
Rather than stiff, staged shots, I focused on capturing candid, natural moments as Nigel taught several different classes. From younger dancers learning the basics to older students perfecting routines, the images show genuine smiles, movement, and energy. This type of photography works especially well for schools and clubs because it tells a story and feels authentic.
Overcoming the Challenges of Shooting in Low Light
Photographing inside a Letchworth community centre came with its own challenges – for the evening shots, that was harsh overhead lighting and very little natural light. In these situations, you can only work with what’s there, so I adapted my approach to make sure Nigel still got a strong set of images.
I shot a real class in action, meaning nothing could be staged. Everyone featured was an amateur who had never been in front of a camera before, so my job was to stay discreet, position myself carefully, and capture genuine moments without disrupting the lesson.
To create variety, I used students as foreground interest to frame shots, giving a natural, immersive feel. Technically, I worked with a fast shutter speed and low aperture, swapping between a 70-200mm lens for candid close-ups and a 50mm lens for wider context shots.
